Palemahan is derived from a word lemah which means land (tanah), yard (tanah pekarangan) or settlement (wilayah pemukiman). In general palemahan is an aspect of Tri Hita Karana which is related to the physical aspects of the environment (environmental linkages).
In order to be able to implement Tri Hita Karana in Hotels some of the following criteria need to be considered. since major attractions for tourists to come to Bali is related to Balinese culture, companies/operations which run their businesses in Bali have the responsibility to look after the local (Balinese) culture. For example, in building a hotel, syles and concepts of Balinese architecture need to be adopted. This includes the adoption of Tri Mandala and Tri Angga concepts. In addition, local (Balinese) terms are recommended to be used for the name of buildings, restaurants, meeting rooms, halls, child care, and other facilities.
There should be a commmitment from the operation in improving the quality of the environment. The company needs to be able to set up an environmental management system, so, environmental management in the hotel being able to abided to the laws, customs or in line with the local (Balinese) values. The companies' commitment is spelled out in its action plans and implemented through its programmes, within as well asoutside the hotel.
The company should save energy, limit the use of natural resources (such as land and water), and it is expected to be able to handled sewage, garbage as well as toxic waste. Tjis includes the capability in reusing, reducing and recycling bottles, cans and plastic bags, as well as composting the organic, 'green', garbage.
The hotel manages the environment, monitors the quality and makes an evaluation wherever appropriate, by which the status of the hotel (whether apolutant or friend to the environment) can be justified. The hotel management may then take measures if something needs to be done in order to be able to mitigate the negative impacts. Thus continual improvement can be expected on and on through consultation with Tri Hita Karana consultant.
Other factors which need to be considered in implementing the Tri Hita Karana concept in hotel is conservation of the ecosystem. This includes efforts being made to conserve flora and fauna, especially those which are protected by regulations or conventions, either because they are endangered, rare or vulnerable (see IUCN 1990 or Indonesian regulation, PP No. 7 / 1999).
Support for conservation programmes can be made such as through habitat protection as well as through legal and professional captive breeding programmes. Adopting organic farming or permaculture concepts is also recommended as long as they are in line with the local, Balinese culture.
The company should keep going with their efforts to save the world through action programmes. It should activelyparticipate in handling the environment in local, national or international levels.
