CAK or KECAK

Nobody knows what is the story of this dance. One hundred men or more, are sitting in a circle, moving their hands and bodies and heads and fingers, and singing: "Chuck......chuck.......chuck......!" in variations of rythm and tones. In 1930 a German Artist, Walter Spies, launched an idea he drew from the "Wayang Wong" performance and "Sang Hyang" dance. Then a "new" veraion of Cak was born, a combination of Cak and the story of Ramayaa. this dance usually is only performed at night.

At the beginning of the show all of the men only sit and sing and move back and forth around a number of coconut-oil torches to accompany the Ramayana dancers. but soon after the story steps up to the monkey scenes they join the dancers to play the monkeys.

Nowdays there are many versions of Cak created by the Balinese younger dancers in order to increase the wealth of Balinese arts.
